4RM+ULA is dedicated to utilizing design to improve the local community. 4RM+ULA partnered with TEN x TEN studio and Juxtaposition Arts to create the Magic Shed + Diamond Cloud at Freedom Square. With intent to promote community gathering and decriminalize public space, the West Broadway Area Coalition hired 4RM+ULA transformed the vacant lot on West Broadway Avenue into an active and passive plaza for neighborhood residents to enjoy year-round.

To support the visual and performing art scene of the local community, 4RM+ULA designed an imaginative and multifunctional infrastructure that easily adapts to the community’s needs. The Magic Shed pavilion transforms from an active community space with shelter, transaction counters, and performance stage by day to a glowing beacon of color changing light at night. The Diamond Cloud provides a dynamic, light-reflective, shading element for the plaza. Together, they illuminate West Broadway Avenue, honoring the artistry of the local community.

Both 4RM+ULA and TEN x TEN donated 100% of the design fee for this project as a service to the Northside community. From markets to fitness classes to community meals, North Minneapolis’ diverse residents can reclaim the public space for the betterment of their community.
